Why choose a Corten Steel Fire Pit
Corten steel has a unique look that will form a stable, rust-like patina over time that actually helps seal the surface. It then becomes very resistant to any and all weather and is ideal for year round use. This also makes it extremely low maintenance.
You may wonder what makes Corten steel different from ordinary carbon steel. Corten steel contains copper, nickel, and chromium which makes it form a sealed oxide layer that resists any further corrosion.
The steel will be exposed to dry and wet conditions, the oxygen and moisture react to create a very dense, rusty layer that now protects itself. It will not form chips and flakes of rust like usually would happen under those conditions. Rather this patina adheres to the surface and prevents further oxidation underneath. Corten steel is extremely durable and a smart choice.
Some of the pros are its minimal maintenance once the patina stabilizes, it's structurally sound and strong, and the look is very different from your typical stainless and carbon steel fire pits. It also needs no painting. Keep in mind during the initial phase of ownership, some of the rust will run off onto wherever you place the fire pit. That goes away with time.
Corten steel has a natural rustic and tough look that draws you in. I picture finding one in old barn and thinking, "look at that old rusty giant bowl".
I fell in love with mine the moment I saw it. I have multiple fire pits and it's hard to choose one as the best or favorite but the Corten steel pit is up there. You will not be disappointed. There are so many different looks when choosing a fire pit. If the Corten steel look is for you then you can just sit back and enjoy its functionality and natural style.
