Why Choose a Carbon Steel Fire Pit

Carbon Steel
When I first started researching materials for fire pits, carbon steel was the one metal I heard repeated over and over. Carbon is obviously one of its main components which really makes its steel very durable, tough, and strong. So strong in fact it can withstand repeated use and just about any outdoor conditions. It handles extreme heating and cooling effortlessly, all without the metal changing its shape or form.
Characteristics
Carbon steel fire pits hold their heat well, thus producing great burning conditions. Iron Embers Octagonal Cottager 36" Carbon Steel fire pit (painted carbon steel option - see pic above) was one of the first pits I purchased. I still have it and cannot say enough good things about it. I live in the Northeast where weather conditions vary greatly throughout each year. Carbon steel can really withstand most weather scenarios. They have very little upkeep and unlike stone or concrete pits, are more mobile as you can move them around. I move mine every so often to change up the view or just because I feel like putting it somewhere different.
Carbon steel fire pits develop a unique rustic looking patina over time that many people find attractive. It will also protect itself with this barrier and resist further corrosion over the years. Your pit may come coated with a protective iron oxide patina. Other coatings have a highly durable, high-temperature resistant paint, heat-resistant powder coating, or specialized coatings which will withstand extreme temps. Carbon steel fire pits are just TOUGH!
Typically you will find them available with 1/4 inch steel. This makes the weight of the pit less likely to be moved around by wind and other things that can change its location. Its heavy-duty thickness also prevents any warping under high heat which allows the fire pit to last.
1/4 inch carbon steel costs more than thinner metals but you get what you pay for. Your investment should last you easily between 10-20 years, maybe even longer.
A Great Choice
You will ultimately choose your fire pit with many things in mind besides what material it's made of. If you do choose a Carbon Steel Fire Pit, you will have chosen wisely.
